Australia’s Scenic Rim

Australia's Queensland is renowned for its remarkable attractions, such as The Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and the stunning beaches of The Gold Coast. However, there is a hidden gem in Queensland that has gone unnoticed for years: The Scenic Rim. Situated approximately 90 minutes southwest of the vibrant city of Brisbane, which is set to host the 2032 Olympics, The Scenic Rim may be more understated than its counterparts, but it is equally as magnificent as the state's other renowned landmarks.

Unveiling Queensland's Hidden Gem: The Scenic Rim - A Natural Wonder

If you haven't heard of The Scenic Rim, you're not alone. Even some residents of Brisbane seemed uncertain about its existence when I inquired. In essence, it encompasses a vast arc of dormant volcanic mountains, adorned with rolling hills, farmlands, and small rural communities. Additionally, it offers wineries, brewpubs, and eco-lodges like Spicers Canopy Luxury Tents. The Scenic Rim boasts six National Parks and an extensive network of hiking trails spanning hundreds of miles.

The Scenic Rim: Queensland's Best-Kept Secret Revealed

Formed approximately 23 million years ago, The Scenic Rim is a lush and dramatic region that remains largely unfamiliar to most Americans. Yet, it provides a taste of the legendary Australian Outback merely an hour and a half away from the country's fastest-growing city. Lonely Planet even recognized The Scenic Rim's allure in 2022, naming it one of the top 10 regions in the world to visit.

Explore the Enchanting Scenic Rim: Queensland's Untouched Paradise

Eager to explore this hidden gem, I embarked on a day trip with Eco Safaris Queensland, an adventure travel company based in Brisbane and owned by Tim Scarisbrick, a Tasmanian native who now resides in Queensland. Scarisbrick, a friendly and knowledgeable guide well-versed in the intricacies of The Scenic Rim, proved to be the ideal companion for an eight-hour tour in his comfortable Range Rover HSE.

The day trip aspect was perfect, allowing for seamless integration with a visit to Brisbane while experiencing the wonders of this idyllic landscape. Throughout the day, we embarked on scenic drives, indulged in light hiking, and made numerous stops at various viewpoints to take in the awe-inspiring vistas. One highlight was our drive along Green Hills Road, a dirt track where Scarisbrick paused as we reached a high ridge. Stepping out into a gentle breeze and tranquil silence, we were greeted by a panoramic spectacle of volcanic mountains, verdant slopes, sprawling valleys, and minimal signs of human habitation. Apart from a few sheep grazing in the distance, the scenery felt almost untouched by time.

The Scenic Rim: Queensland's Ultimate Nature Escape

"This road has been touted as the most beautiful in Australia by Steve Irwin," Scarisbrick mentioned, referring to the late Australian zookeeper, conservationist, and television personality who played a significant role in introducing the world to the country's wildlife and landscapes.

Irresistibly captivating, it was difficult to dispute Irwin's claim. However, there were more surprises in store later in the day. We paused at Lake Moogerah, passed by landscapes adorned with flame trees, jacaranda trees, and forests of eucalyptus, while attempting to spot koalas perched high in the branches to no avail.

The Scenic Rim: Queensland's Captivating Gem Off the Beaten Path

Our journey brought us to Boonah, a town that resembled a setting straight out of an Australian Outback film. For lunch, we visited Scenic Rim Brewery in Mt. Alford, a charming hamlet where Michael and Wendy Webster transformed a neglected general store from 1884 into a vibrant café. Wendy, drawing inspiration from her Dutch heritage, prepared hearty dishes like bitterballen (beef croquettes) and bratwurst, perfectly paired with Michael's assortment of beers, including Digga's Pale Ale and Fat Man Maroon Ale.

Unlocking the Secrets of The Scenic Rim: Queensland's Natural Marvel

For those yearning to explore more of The Scenic Rim, the Scenic Rim Trail offers a four-day trek spanning 30 miles from Thornton View to Cunninghams Gap. On the other hand, a day trip is ideal for those seeking to return to Brisbane and indulge in its dynamic restaurant scene, which I have previously covered in Forbes, just in time for dinner.
